Harm reduction & welfare
What this indicator asks
How widespread are harm reduction and welfare programmes at New York’s venues and events? Are they well resourced?
77.0/ 100 · New York
An expert said harm reduction has increased over the past five to ten years. At the bigger clubs, there are EMTs on site for part of the night, Narcan and quiet rooms away from the party. Safer space monitors are normal at long and after-hours parties. DanceSafe, a non-profit, runs peer harm reduction at events.
The NYC Office of Nightlife runs “Narcan Behind Every Bar” with the city health department. In November 2025 it co-hosted “Respect the Night”, on preventing sexual violence in nightlife.
While 74% of survey respondents say harm reduction or safety staff would be helpful during incidents, one expert said provision is not in all venues, and the response to drink spiking is reactive and not proactive. A participant described one bar:
“It’s also really male… I’ve had a lot of home girls tell me like they don’t go to [the bar] because they got harassed and nobody did anything about it.”
