Perceived safety at night
What this indicator asks
How safe do people feel at night in Amsterdam, and how does this differ by gender and identity?
A total of 86% of respondents feel safe inside venues, clubs and bars, but only 45% feel safe travelling home. The gap between genders is largest on the way home: 61% of men feel safe, against 28% of women.
47% of respondents avoided going out at least once in the past year because they did not feel safe.
51% of LGBTQIA+ respondents say the police would be helpful during incidents, against 66% of other respondents.
Respondents named queer venues such as De Trut and Bitterzoet as places where staff and guests look out for each other. One respondent wrote: “De trut is voor mij de enige plek waar ik me 100% veilig voel.” (“For me De Trut is the only place where I feel 100% safe.”)
