Nighttime crime data measurement
What this indicator asks
How do the police in Amsterdam define, record and publish crime at night, and who can get this data?
not scored
We reviewed the crime data that the Dutch national police publish with the national statistics office. This indicator describes how data is kept. It does not report crime figures or say whether the city is safe.
The Netherlands has a national definition of nightlife violence, uitgaansgeweld, agreed in 2014. It is based on place: violence in a nightlife area or on the roads that lead to it. When the police enter a case in their records, they cannot label it as nightlife violence. So these cases cannot be counted.
Published police data shows crime by type, month and neighbourhood. It has no time of day and no type of place. So the city government, researchers and the public cannot produce a figure for crime at night.
The police record noise from bars and clubs and public drunkenness as nuisance, not as crime.
