Nighttime crime data measurement
What this indicator asks
How do the police in São Paulo define, record and publish crime at night, and who can get this data?
not scored
We reviewed the crime data that the São Paulo State public security secretariat publishes from civil police reports. This indicator describes how data is kept. It does not report crime figures or say whether the city is safe.
Every police report is published one by one, with the hour, the type of venue and the address. Anyone outside the government can count crimes at night and narrow it to bars and clubs. The state does not define night: a report carries either an exact hour or a period label, and no document says which hours make up which period.
In January and February 2025, a third of the city’s reports carried only a period label and no hour. Noise and the funk street parties called pancadões are not crime types.
