Nighttime crime data measurement
What this indicator asks
How do the police in Lagos define, record and publish crime at night, and who can get this data?
not scored
We reviewed the crime data that the Nigeria Police Force records and the Federal Ministry of Police Affairs publishes. This indicator describes how data is kept. It does not report crime figures or say whether the city is safe.
Lagos State criminal law defines night as the time between 6:30 pm and 6:30 am. Night changes the offence: burglary is housebreaking committed at night.
The only published police figures are a yearly federal summary, with one total per state in six broad columns. There is no time of day and no type of place, so nobody outside the government can count crime at night in Lagos. The latest report covers 2023. Lagos State publishes no police crime data of its own.
