Nighttime crime data measurement
What this indicator asks
How do the police in New York define, record and publish crime at night, and who can get this data?
not scored
We reviewed the crime data that the New York City Police Department records and publishes. This indicator describes how data is kept. It does not report crime figures or say whether the city is safe.
The police do not define night. Every crime report carries the hour it happened, the type of place and a location, from 2006 to date. Bars and nightclubs are their own type of place. Anyone outside the government can count reports by hour, by type of place and by precinct.
The law defines night by the sun: from thirty minutes after sunset to thirty minutes before sunrise. The published crime data has no domestic violence marker, so any night figure built from it includes domestic violence.
