What this indicator asks
How much do people feel a sense of ownership over nightlife culture in Lagos?
55.8/ 100 · Lagos
A survey respondent named Floss Parties as the first space of its kind for marginalised groups where she felt she belonged, and said it is “still the only space” like that. Another wrote that she thought she hated nightlife until she discovered raves in Lagos.
Of survey respondents, 61% agree that the scene is for people who live in Lagos, not for tourists. A participant said most of Lagos nightlife is for people with money to spend, but that with the rise of raves there is “something for everyone”, if you find your circle. Another said the word ‘nightlife’ leaves out the rave scene, which organisers have built while losing money:
“The term nightlife for many years has been used just to be known as the clubs… They don’t really count this rave scene… A lot of organisers and curators lose money at every turn… if we spend all this time and effort to build what we’re building, and then people who have already been on the other side just come and take over, it will be very painful.”
