What this indicator asks
How much do people feel a sense of ownership over nightlife culture in São Paulo?
56.0/ 100 · São Paulo
A survey respondent named Submundo 808 for bringing funk to the centre of nightlife while respecting where the sound comes from, giving space to artists from the periferia and selling tickets at affordable prices. Another named Sapphic nights out as spaces where she feels safe and feels she belongs.
A total of 59% of survey respondents agree that the scene is for people who live in São Paulo, not for tourists. Asked who the nightlife is for, every written answer from participants included the words money, class, influence or access. A participant said the city sees the night only as “consumption”, not as part of any cultural infrastructure. Another said there is no public policy, and everything cannot be put on the backs of the people running the businesses.
