Diversity of scenes & experimental programming
What this indicator asks
How diverse and varied are São Paulo’s scenes, including experimental and interdisciplinary work, and new formats and models?
59.8/ 100 · São Paulo
A total of 94% of survey respondents in São Paulo agree that there is a variety of scenes, styles, sounds and genres. Here, 59% agree that new and experimental events happen often, and 21% disagree.
Participants said the street was where new culture was presented — such as parties of 300 to 500 people in the Vale do Anhangabaú, for limited hours — “never” had noise problems. A participant said problems came when events closed the square off and put 15,000 people there:
“The street is missing. We used to have that space of experimentation in the street. It was the space we had for platforming new people (A rua era esse espaço que a gente tinha de apresentar pessoas novas) — only that space was taken away from us.”
A participant said the scene never left a legacy in terms of resources for the next party, and proposed pooling infrastructure and money across collectives. Another said this used to happen: chemical toilets were once shared between parties.
