What this indicator asks
Who are the upcoming artists, sounds and styles in New York?
not scored
Participants made 35 entries, and no artist, sound or style was named twice. Free outdoor parties were the first answer, such as Public Service, St. James Joy, a block party on St. James Place in Clinton Hill, and SanDia, a house dance series where the age ranges mix.
A participant said improvisation between jazz and electronic music, and live electronic improvisation is the most exciting thing happening in the city. Participants named producers who play live hardware sets, such as Sweater On Polo and Matük of the Bliss Point crew.
Participants also named hardcore and punk, such as Lip Critic, a Brooklyn band with two drummers and two samplers, and Planta Industrial, a punk group from the Bronx.
The group was asked to name the artists and parties bringing new sounds to New York. Looking at the names on screen, a participant said:
“In the scene a lot of these people that are listed though are also people that already have the most visibility… A lot of us have been in this for a very long time and, you know, again, are not as social media focused, but if you know, you know.”
