Cultural diversity in programming

A total of 73% of survey respondents in São Paulo agree that diverse communities take part in nighttime culture, and 58% of respondents from marginalised groups agree.

A participant who opened a bar said that when they booked new artists the door did not return, and when they put on a better known name the house filled up. Another said São Paulo programmes a style only after it has already filled rooms in London, Amsterdam and Berlin.

Afrogroove is a party for African and Afro-Brazilian electronic music. An expert said it fills rooms in London, Amsterdam, Berlin and across the United States, but in São Paulo it is turned down by those venues that don’t ask who its audience is.

Participants stated security and bar staff turn marginalised people away, and proposed training the whole operation.
