Cross-agency coordination for nighttime culture
What this indicator asks
When New York’s government agencies work together on nightlife, is there a lasting way to do so, who leads it, and does it support or police nighttime culture?
58.3/ 100 · New York
We looked at three elements: whether a lasting joint mechanism exists, who leads it, and whether it supports or polices night culture.
Since January 2024, CURE has replaced MARCH, the city’s surprise multi-agency raids on venues. Agencies must engage the Office of Nightlife before any joint inspection, and venues get 30 days’ written notice. In 2025 the police made 175 referrals, and 26 led to inspections.
MEND NYC is a free mediation service for venues and neighbours. It had completed 113 successful mediations by May 2026.
The police, not the Office, approve every inspection. The State Liquor Authority, which grants and suspends liquor licences, is a state body and sits outside the city’s joint mechanism.
