Legal status & protection of cultural venues
What this indicator asks
Are music and club venues in Lagos recognised in law as cultural places, and does that recognition protect them?
21.0/ 100 · Lagos
We looked at three issues: whether night culture is legal where it happens, whether venues hold a legal status as culture, and whether that status protects them. Promises made and studies score lower than laws in force.
No law found restricts dancing, performance or closing hours. Clubs must operate enclosed and soundproofed, and the state environment agency can seal a venue for noise without a hearing. The 2011 heritage declaration lists two music halls, the National Theatre and the MUSON Centre.
No law gives clubs or music venues cultural status. The New Afrika Shrine in Ikeja holds no heritage listing.
An expert described a party across the water from Banana Island, in Ikoyi. It was shut down after a single complaint call from a resident.
