Public funding for nighttime culture
What this indicator asks
Does public funding in Amsterdam reach nighttime culture, and can grassroots organisers apply for it?
65.0/ 100 · Amsterdam
We looked at three elements: how directly public funding is aimed at the night, who can apply, and how long it is committed for.
Amsterdam has a scheme defined by night hours: activities must take place between 10pm and 6am. Individuals can apply in their own name, but a collective must first register as a legal partnership. Over 75 initiatives have been funded since May 2024.
- Night culture scheme, Amsterdam Fund for the Arts
- €5,000 to €15,000 for artistic work at night. From 2026, the scheme is no longer a separate entity and is combined into the city's project subsidies.
- City project subsidies
- open to makers, collectives and organisations, including night culture projects. Some places are reserved for applicants from Noord, Nieuw-West and Zuidoost.
- National music hubs scheme, 2026 to 2028
- for pop, hip-hop and dance.
- National programming contribution
- funds programming in small concert halls, clubs and festivals.
