Public funding for nighttime culture
What this indicator asks
Does public funding in New York reach nighttime culture, and can grassroots organisers apply for it?
45.0/ 100 · New York
We looked at three elements: how directly funding is aimed at the night, who can apply, and how long it is committed for.
New York has a grant defined by nightlife. The first Nightlife Grant gave over $350,000 to nonprofits in late 2025. Only nonprofits can apply: a promoter, a collective, an individual organiser or a nightlife business cannot. It has run once, and no second round has been announced.
The city’s main cultural fund is also open only to nonprofits, with two years of arts and cultural work in the city. Borough arts councils re-grant to individual artists, but this money is not aimed at the night.
- Nightlife Grant, NYC Office of Nightlife
- up to $50,000 per nonprofit, funded through the Neighborhood 360° Grant Program.
- Cultural Development Fund, NYC Department of Cultural Affairs
- for nonprofit arts and cultural organisations with a two-year track record in the city.
- Borough arts councils
- re-granting that reaches individual artists.
