How many venues in São Paulo are spaces for experimental, interdisciplinary and progressive work?

We counted fixed venues in the city that have been open since at least January 2025 and hold regular events at night. Dedicated experimental venues count for more than mixed venues which also host experimental nights. Festivals, series without their own venue and closed venues are not counted.
São Paulo has one dedicated experimental venue and 11 mixed venues that host experimental events. The dedicated venue is Centro da Terra in Sumaré, which presents music, theatre and performance most weeks of the year, often on Mondays. Five of the broadly experimental venues are public or institutional, among them three Sesc centres and the Centro Cultural São Paulo.
A participant who co-owns a bar said new venues copy businesses that already work, and then book only artists who have already succeeded, because if they take a risk they cannot keep the business standing.
