Experimental venues
What this indicator asks
How many venues in Seoul are spaces for experimental, interdisciplinary and progressive work?
53.4/ 100 · Seoul
We counted fixed venues in the city that have been open since at least January 2025 and hold regular events at night. Dedicated experimental venues count for more than mixed venues which also host experimental nights. Festivals, series without their own venue and closed venues are not counted.
Seoul has three dedicated experimental venues and 16 mixed venues that host experimental events. The three dedicated venues are Dotolim in Sangsu-dong, Banjul in Jongno and Yogiga in Hongdae, all small rooms run by the musicians or curators who programme them. Dotolim has held improvised and experimental music since 2008, and its concert series has so far staged over 200 concerts.
The broadly experimental venues are mostly clubs and live rooms in Hongdae, Itaewon and Euljiro. Most are registered as general restaurants, where customers may not dance.
