How many fixed music venues have been active in Greater São Paulo since 1 January 2025?

We assessed 319 spaces in Greater São Paulo and identified 147 as dedicated music venues where music is the main purpose. The other 172 spaces also host music alongside other uses, such as arts and creative spaces, bars and theatres. Only 4 of the 319 are found outside the city of São Paulo.
Greater São Paulo has 147 dedicated music venues, about 6.8 for every million people. Of this number, 51% are nightclubs, 23% are bars and 20% are concert halls and live music venues.
A total of 94% of survey respondents in São Paulo call nightclubs and live music venues important for the city’s nightlife. This is the highest of six kinds of space, ahead of outdoor events, temporary spaces, cultural and community spaces, places such as record shops and studios and bars and restaurants with music. Respondents named D-Edge, Laroc, Porta and Formosa Hi-Fi most often.
An expert said there is also a nighttime culture found in the outer neighbourhoods. People who live there go out there, because sometimes it takes two hours to get to the centre.
