We found more than 420 cultural venues in São Paulo holding ticketed events. Opening hours are known for over 280 of the confirmed venues.
On at least one day of the week, 66% of confirmed venues stay open after 9pm and at least 33% stay open after 11pm.
Bars that sell alcohol and have outdoor space may not open between 1am and 5am without a special licence. An expert said there is no place in the culture or tourism secretariats where one can go and ask what is needed to open a club:
“To get an operating licence in São Paulo, besides it being very expensive, you have to be well connected (você tem que ser amigo do rei).”
This expert stated that many cultural spaces and clubs operated for years, and opened and closed without a licence.
