Festivals with sustainability commitments
What this indicator asks
How many of the largest night-culture events in Greater Sydney publish a specific environmental commitment, and do they ask their audience to take part?
65.0/ 100 · Sydney
We looked at three issues: the share of events that publish a commitment, how many environmental areas they cover, and whether they ask the audience to act.
Five of the nine largest events publish a specific environmental commitment in full: Mardi Gras, Laneway, Field Day, Sydney Festival and Sydney New Year’s Eve.
Five ask the audience to act. Mardi Gras bans non-biodegradable glitter and plastic confetti from the Parade, and every can and bottle in its bins raises 10c for the organisation. Sydney Festival asks its audience to consider the vegetarian option. Laneway is the only event that publishes what its audience achieved: 189 tonnes of carbon was removed through audience participation.
Of the three events run by the government, only New Year’s Eve publishes a commitment.
