Education pathways into nightlife careers
What this indicator asks
What education and training lead into nightlife careers in creative, technical and production roles in New York? Is education accessible for those who can’t afford it, and does it lead to work?
74.5/ 100 · New York
We looked at five areas: formal degree courses, private and vocational schools, informal training run by scenes, affordability, and connection to work.
The city runs free classes for the nightlife industry. NITE School, run by the NYC Office of Nightlife, covers topics from business development and fire safety to mental health and party safety.
VOX is a four-month programme that trains New Yorkers to run venues, with an eight-week paid internship in a local venue. Formal education and experience are not required.
Every student on NYU’s Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music degree must complete an internship. The private DJ and production schools, such as 343 Labs, Garnish and SoundCollective, have no free or subsidised route. No degree takes club culture as its subject.
