Non-music cultural events at night

We counted non-music cultural events that start or are open at 6pm or later, between 1 January 2025 and 31 October 2026. Half the score comes from the number of events. Half comes from how evenly they spread across eight kinds of cultural formats: art, theatre and opera, dance, film, comedy, literature, festivals and markets, and public and light art. Each unique event edition counts only once — repeat listings are excluded.

A total of 170 unique cultural events take place at night. Of this, 26% are theatre and opera and 70% take place in the City of Sydney.

The big galleries open late one night a week: the Art Gallery of NSW is open until 10pm on Wednesdays, and the Museum of Contemporary Art till 9pm on Thursdays. Outside the city centre, most events at night are festivals.
