Rehearsal & recording studios

Lagos has around 890 music studios that people can book to record or rehearse music; this means around 70 studios per million residents. Most are small: namely, one room with minimal equipment and DIY setups. Many are run by a single producer who records artists.

An expert said many people learn production, DJing or mixing by themselves, with their phones, laptops or earphones, and not in a “proper” studio, because they cannot get access to equipment. The expert said it takes time to get started alone without support or a network of DJ or producer friends.

A total of 64% of survey respondents in Lagos call places such as studios, record shops and radio stations important for holding the scene together.
