What this indicator asks
How many rehearsal and recording studios does Sydney have?
58.0/ 100 · Sydney
Greater Sydney has around 170 music studios that people can book (excluding film, podcasts, voice-over or advertising studios). This number averages at around 31 studios per million residents.
Two rehearsal spaces are run with local government: City of Sydney Creative Studios, and the rehearsal space at the East Sydney Community and Arts Centre in Darlinghurst. An expert said the City is already close to full use of its own buildings, and must share them fairly:
“I feel like we’re doing a pretty good job at maxing out the usage of what we already have… We can’t just say, ‘Okay, they’re all going to be for parties.’ We also have to take into account that there are other needs across the community, whether it’s homelessness and social services, sporting teams and recreation, senior citizens, all that sort of stuff.”
Offbeat Collective is a DIY complex with six music studios, run by two people for almost six years, with over 200 artists coming through each year. It pays market rent that goes up every year, with no subsidy and no salary for the two people who run it.
