Rehearsal & recording studios

What this indicator asks

How many rehearsal and recording studios does New York have?

71.0/ 100 · New York

New York has around 610 music studios that people can book to record or rehearse music; around 71 studios per million residents. Some studios run on several sites: Sound Studios has four, Pirate three and The Cutting Room two.

Non-profit centres rent rooms to musicians, such as the National Opera Center and the Abrons Arts Center. A participant said much more music is made in New York than 20 years ago:

“There are aspects of where music is getting made and how much music is getting made that is so much higher than it was, I would say, like 20 years ago… I think that it’s because people have built institutions that have allowed for people to be able to make music.”

A total of 80% of survey respondents in New York call places that hold the scene together without hosting events important: these are studios, record shops and radio stations.
