Public support for environmental sustainability
What this indicator asks
Does New York’s environmental policy name nightlife as a target, and can venues and events get practical help to become more sustainable?
55.0/ 100 · New York
We looked at five areas: whether nightlife is named as a target; whether practical help exists; whether the sector uses it; the general environmental policy the sector falls under; and recent steps in the right direction.
The city’s first Nightlife Grant paid for a climate project for venues: the Nightlife Climate Constellation, by Future Meets Present, which supports venues in adopting sustainable practices. It combines research, feasibility studies and events on energy efficiency and waste.
State and city energy programmes give free help and money for energy upgrades to any business or building owner. None names nightlife. Most clubs rent, so this help normally reaches the landlord. No list of venues taking part in the climate project, nor any results, have been published.
