Public support for environmental sustainability
What this indicator asks
Does Amsterdam's environmental policy name nightlife as a target, and can venues and events get practical help to become more sustainable?
59.0/ 100 · Amsterdam
We looked at five areas: whether nightlife is named as a target; whether practical help exists; whether the sector uses it; the general environmental policy the sector falls under; and recent steps in the right direction.
Every event in Amsterdam with 500 or more visitors must submit a sustainability plan to get a permit. The city advises organisers and adds public power and water points at event sites.
Two public green schemes list live music venues among the buildings that can apply. Both are open to many other buildings, such as schools, museums and theatres. Only building owners can apply to DUMAVA, the national scheme, and most clubs rent. The Province of Noord-Holland’s scheme for cultural institutions is open only to music venues that are members of the VNPF, the Dutch association of pop venues and festivals. The province halved this scheme’s budget in 2026.
The support reaches events, not clubs. The city asks for a green policy only from the cultural institutions it funds.
