What this indicator asks
Does São Paulo’s environmental policy name nightlife as a target, and can venues and events get practical help to become more sustainable?
31.0/ 100 · São Paulo
We looked at five areas: whether nightlife is named as a target; whether practical help exists; whether the sector uses it; the general environmental policy the sector falls under; and recent steps in the right direction.
The revised city climate plan proposes energy and waste criteria for events the city runs or supports, by 2027 and 2028 - including less use of diesel generators.
Two city laws name nightclubs, festivals and shows, but only as places that must comply. A 2020 ban on disposable plastic cups, plates and cutlery has not been put into practice, because the decree that sets out how it applies has not been published. A 2023 law requires shows and festivals to file a waste plan. No city funding, service or advice for organisers comes with either law.
